Microsoft και Apple, κάποτε
Ξαναδιάβασα το 8ο κεφάλαιο από το Becoming Steve Jobs1 του Brent Schlender στο οποίο περιγράφει την επιστροφή του στην Apple μετά από δέκα χρονια. Η Apple εκείνη την εποχή ήταν σε μαύρα χάλια, έχανε λεφτά και έκανε απολύσεις. CEO ήταν ο Gil Amelio, πλήρως ακατάλληλος να την κάνει να ορθοποδήσει καθώς δεν είχε καθόλου εμπειρία από τη βιομηχανία των προσωπικών υπολογιστών. Επίσης ήταν μάλλον άχαρος επικοινωνιακά.
Once, while talking to a group at a dinner party that included Larry Ellison2, Amelio tried to put his company's problems in perspective for the other guests. "Apple is a boat," he said. "There's a hole in the boat, and it's taking on water. But there's also a treasure on board. And the problem is, everyone on board is rowing in different directions, so the boat is just standing still. My job is to get everyone rowing in the same direction." After Amelio walked away, Ellison turned to the person standing next to him and asked, "But what about the hole?" That was one story Steve never got tired of telling.
Αλλά μιά από τις διαστάσεις που έχουν ενδιαφέρον στην ιστορία είναι ότι την ίδια εποχή η Microsoft μεσουρανούσε. Τα Windows '95 είχαν βγει δύο χρόνια πριν κι ο κόσμος έκανε ουρές για να τα αποχτήσει.
Steve [..] took on a unique project he'd be handed by Anderson: to convince Bill Gates to continue to support the Macintosh with new versions of the company's productivity applications, like Excel and Word, which Microsoft would soon begin to bundle into a suite of productivity programs to be called Office.
Θα ήταν καταστροφή αν το Office δεν έβγαινε για το Mac. O Jobs κατάφερε να κάνει συμφωνία με τον Gates. Η Apple θα παραιτούνταν από μια δικαστική διαμάχη που είχαν για πατέντες. Ως αντάλλαγμα, η Microsoft θα ανακοίνωνε δημόσια ότι το Office θα έβγαινε στο Mac για τα επόμενα πέντε χρόνια τουλάχιστον. Επίσης, ως ένδειξη πίστης στο μέλλον της Apple, θα αγόραζε 150 εκατομμύρια δολλάρια σε μετοχές της.
Οι ανακοινώσεις έγιναν στο Macworld του 1997. Στο βίντεο στο 27ο λεπτό ο Jobs ξεκινάει να αναφέρεται στη συνεργασία. Οι αντιδράσεις του κοινού - με χειροκροτήματα ανάμεσα σε γιουχαΐσματα - είναι ενδεικτικές της σχεδόν «οπαδικής» κουλτούρας της εποχής. Ο Bill Gates εμφανίστηκε στην οθόνη σε ζωντανή μετάδοση από το Seattle.
The moment turned out to be Steve's worst case of stage management ever. Bill's face, with his familiar smile that can border on a smirk, was about six feet tall on the massive screen above and behind Steve. He looked down on Steve as if to say, "I'm sorry, little people, while I enjoy gracing you with my presence, I can't be bothered to fly down to your little campfire singalong." The comparisons with Apple's old "Big Brother" ad were inevitable.
